Sexual Assault Survivorship Part 3 - Sustaining

Surviving sexual assault, regardless of the type, is traumatic. Each of us is effected physically, mentally and emotionally. We survivors know that the impact sticks around well after the time of the actual violation. What we don’t (intuitively) know is how to try and manage the myriad of things that are going through our minds and happening to our bodies. So, as a means to help victimized persons, we’ve put together a list of items that may help ease the pain.

In part three of the three-part series, we’re focussing on those items that may help survivors to better sustain. It’s easy to forget to eat or drink, especially soon after suffering a sexual violation. And, the trauma itself can cause issues with our digestive tracks - eating, if we want to, can be difficult. The wrong foods can make us sick.

The brutal truth that we survivors know is that the world doesn’t stop for us. We have to continue to stay alive as our bodies process the chemical surges brought on by the trauma. And, staying alive entails consuming water and safe foods:

      • Water - Dehydration causes a lot of problems for our bodies and they can be worsened when coupled with battling trauma. So, it’s important to consume clean water every single day.

      • Gluten Free Foods - Trauma can negatively impact our digestive systems, specifically our ability to digest certain foods/ingredients. Some studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between trauma and gluten intolerance (studies also include celiac disease).

      • Meal Replacement Drinks/Shakes - Eating may be too much physical labor for some of us. So, beverages that have the needed nutrients for us to survive may be a good for us until we’re able to consume solid foods.

Having the ability to understand what is happening to us and why is key in taking back control of our bodies and our minds. Being able to function, practice self care and sustain puts on ‘back on our feet’. And, it can help set the foundation for us to eventually become stable enough to successfully engage in society.
